Yale Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Rekeying a Yale residential lock in Los Angeles typically costs $45 – $85 per cylinder, with most jobs completed same day. We stock Yale pin kits and compatible key blanks on every service truck, so your old keys stop working and new ones start working in a single visit. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their Yale lock needs rekeying after a move, a lost key, or a tenant turnover – but wear patterns in older Yale cylinders can also make keys stick or fail to turn smoothly.

Which Yale Models This Applies To

Yale’s residential line in Los Angeles splits into two main families you’ll find on front doors: the Yale YH series (YH84, YH85, YH86 knob and deadbolt sets) and the older Yale 5400LN commercial-grade levers that builders installed in many 1980s – 2000s apartment conversions from Hollywood to Koreatown. The YH series uses a standard Schlage C-keyway clone, which means we can rekey it to match existing Schlage hardware in your home. The 5400LN uses Yale’s original keyway, which requires genuine Yale blanks – not a generic copy – or the new key will bind.

To identify your model, check the latch faceplate for a stamped “YH” or “5400” code, or remove the interior thumb-turn and look for a paper label inside the rose. The cylinder length matters: YH deadbolts take a 1-1/8″ cylinder, while 5400LN levers often need a 1″ housing. We carry both OEM Yale pin kits and LAB aftermarket equivalents. For rentals in Los Angeles with heavy turnover, the LAB pins hold up fine. For original Yale keyways in historic buildings near West Adams or Hancock Park, we use factory pins to preserve the smooth Yale feel.

Signs Your Yale Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Your key catches at the same depth every time. This usually means a single pin chamber has worn or a driver spring has lost tension. In Los Angeles, the dry Santa Ana seasons accelerate metal fatigue in Yale springs, especially in south-facing doors that bake afternoon sun.
  • The key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. The tailpiece connecting cylinder to latch has slipped or cracked. Yale’s older 5400LN tailpieces are pot-metal and prone to shear stress if the door frame has settled, which is common in post-war slab construction from the Valley to Mid-City.
  • You need to jiggle the key to find the “sweet spot.” Worn pins have created false gates. A rekey restores clean shear lines, but if the plug itself is scored, the cylinder needs replacement – we check this before quoting.
  • A new key works, but an old key still turns partially. The previous rekey was shallow or mismatched. We see this in Los Angeles apartment buildings where a handyman rekeyed without a pinning kit, leaving old and new pins stacked together.
  • The key won’t insert past the first pin. Debris or a broken key fragment is lodged in the chamber. Yale cylinders have tight tolerances; forcing the key bends the pins and turns a $60 rekey into a $140 cylinder swap.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range
Yale residential rekey (1 cylinder) $45 – $85
Yale rekey + new keys (2 included) $55 – $95
Additional cylinders, same visit $25 – $45 each
Yale cylinder replacement (if damaged) $85 – $165
Master key system setup (Yale YH) $120 – $220

What drives the range: cylinder accessibility (deadbolts are simpler than leversets), whether we need to decode a lost-key situation, and if the existing pins are standard or security spools. Every price is written and confirmed before we start – the number on the phone matches the number on the invoice. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the rekey: if a key fails or a pin drops within a year, we return at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s nothing dangerous about rekeying a Yale cylinder – no springs under tension, no electrical hazard. What goes wrong is precision. Yale factory specs call for pin heights in .003″ increments. A hardware store rekey kit gives you five standard pin sizes and a follower tool that scratches the plug. We’ve rescued plenty of Los Angeles DIY attempts where the owner got the cylinder apart, mixed the springs by length, and couldn’t get the plug back in without jamming.

What you can safely check: verify the keyway type (Yale original vs. Schlage C clone) by trying a Schlage key – if it slides in but won’t turn, you’ve got a true Yale keyway. What you should leave to us: decoding the bitting, matching spool pins if your cylinder has them, and reassembling without damaging the delicate wafer springs. A locked door should only stop the wrong person – not you, because a pin is sitting crooked.
