Schlage Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Schlage deadbolts across Los Angeles for a typical installed price of $185 – $325, depending on the series and whether the door needs modification. Most calls are completed same-day, and we stock the B60N, B62N, and BE365 series on every truck. Homeowners usually discover the problem when the thumb turn spins without retracting the bolt, the key sticks in humid weather, or the bolt jams against a misaligned strike plate after a season of door-frame swelling.
Which Schlage Models This Applies To
Schlage has manufactured deadbolts in three distinct eras, and the mounting specs differ enough that swapping without checking creates headaches. The current residential line uses the B-series chassis: the B60N (single cylinder), B62N (double cylinder), and the decorative B60 variants with Camelot or Georgian trim. The older A-series and the discontinued F-series used narrower faceplates and different backset spacing, so if your Los Angeles home was built between 1965 and 1995, measure before ordering.
The smart deadbolt line, BE365 (Keypad) and Encode/Connect Wi-Fi models, mounts to the same door prep as the B60N but draws power. Battery corrosion is the failure we see most in coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Venice and Playa del Rey, where salt air accelerates terminal oxidation.
We carry OEM Schlage cylinders and Grade 1 hardware on our trucks, plus Specified Security Products aftermarket equivalents where the customer wants commercial-grade durability without the brand premium. The aftermarket cylinders we use are pinned to Schlage’s SC1 keyway and carry the same ANSI Grade 1 rating. For rental properties in Koreatown or Echo Park, we often recommend the aftermarket route and rekey everything to a single master system.
Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- The thumb turn rotates but the bolt doesn’t move. The tailpiece connecting the interior assembly to the bolt mechanism has sheared or slipped its slot. In Los Angeles, we see this most in homes near the coast where thermal expansion cycles loosen the set screw over years of daily use.
- The key works in warm weather but sticks when it’s cool or damp. The cylinder pins are gummed with accumulated dust and oxidized lubricant. Santa Monica and Westwood calls spike in November when the first heavy dew season hits and owners who haven’t serviced their locks in five years suddenly can’t get in.
- The bolt extends but won’t fully seat into the strike plate. Either the strike is out of alignment from seasonal frame movement, common in older Los Angeles homes with raised foundations, or the bolt itself has worn a chamfered edge from repeated mis-striking and no longer catches cleanly.
- The exterior cylinder spins freely when you insert the key. The mounting screws have stripped out of the door or the cylinder retaining pin has broken. This is a security failure, not just a nuisance, because the cylinder can sometimes be pulled from the door with moderate force.
- The keypad or smart lock responds intermittently or drains batteries weekly. Corroded battery contacts or a failing solenoid. In Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, salt air intrusion through the keypad membrane is the culprit in about sixty percent of the smart deadbolts we replace.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Schlage B60N single-cylinder deadbolt, installed | $185 – $245 |
| Schlage B62N double-cylinder deadbolt, installed | $215 – $285 |
| Schlage BE365 keypad deadbolt, installed | $265 – $325 |
| Door prep modification (non-standard bore or backset) | $45 – $95 |
| Rekey to match existing key | $18 – $28 per cylinder |
The range depends on three things: whether the door has standard 2-1/8″ bore and 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ backset, whether the strike plate needs mortising or relocation, and whether you want the new deadbolt keyed to your existing house key. We quote the full installed price on the phone before dispatch, and that number matches the invoice. No call-out surcharge, no after-the-fact parts markup. Every deadbolt installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the mechanism fails, the bolt drags, or the key sticks, we return and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a narrow band where DIY makes sense. If you have a standard prepped door, the correct Schlage model, and a screwdriver, the physical swap is straightforward. Check your backset measurement, check the faceplate type, and don’t overtighten the mounting screws, which strips the chassis threads.
Where DIY goes wrong: drilling a new bore without a door jig, which splinters the veneer on a solid-core door; misaligning the strike so the bolt wears unevenly; or discovering mid-job that your “standard” 1980s Los Angeles tract home used a non-standard backset. Double-cylinder deadbolts also require precise tailpiece length adjustment, and a miscut leaves the interior thumb turn inoperative or the exterior keyway misaligned.
We’re not affiliated with Schlage, but we’ve installed enough of their hardware across Los Angeles to know the common pitfalls by neighborhood and construction era. If you want it done once, with a written price and a technician whose name and photo you receive before they arrive, call (910) 714-4287.
FAQs
A Grade 1 Schlage B60N in normal residential use typically lasts 15 – 20 years, but Los Angeles coastal exposure cuts that to 8 – 12 years due to salt air corrosion of the exterior components. Inland neighborhoods like Pasadena or the San Fernando Valley see the longer end of the range. Call (910) 714-4287 if your deadbolt is approaching a decade and starting to feel loose.
Sometimes. A sticky cylinder can be cleaned and repinned, and a loose strike plate can be remortised. But if the bolt mechanism, tailpiece, or chassis is worn, replacement is more reliable and usually only slightly more expensive than a full rebuild. We quote both options on the phone so you can decide.
Standard replacement on a properly prepped door takes 25 – 40 minutes. If we need to modify the bore, backset, or strike location, plan on 60 – 90 minutes. We bring every common part on the truck, so there’s no return trip.
Yes. We carry the B60N, B62N, and BE365 series in satin nickel and aged bronze, plus SC1 keyway cylinders and Specified Security Products Grade 1 equivalents. If you have a specific finish or smart-lock model, tell us when you call and we’ll confirm it’s on the truck before we dispatch.
