Sargent Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Sargent deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically runs $280 – $520 for a complete replacement, including the hardware, strike alignment, and door prep if needed. We stock Sargent 7800, 8200, and 4870 series deadbolts on our trucks and can usually get to you same-day anywhere from Venice to Los Feliz. Most homeowners realize their Sargent deadbolt is failing when the key starts catching at 10 o’clock, the thumb turn grinds instead of snapping, or the bolt no longer throws fully into the strike – all signs that the internal cam, tailpiece, or cylinder housing is wearing out after years of Los Angeles dust and temperature swings.
Which Sargent Models This Applies To
Sargent deadbolts fall into three main series you’ll find across Los Angeles homes and commercial buildings, and matching the right hardware matters because the backset, faceplate, and cylinder type vary.
- 7800 Series: The residential grade you’ll see in mid-century homes from Sherman Oaks to Pasadena. Uses a standard 2-3/8″ backset, 1″ throw bolt. Look for the model stamp on the latch faceplate edge.
- 4870 Series: Heavy-duty cylindrical deadbolt, common in multi-family buildings and commercial entries from Koreatown to DTLA. Takes a mortise cylinder rather than a rim cylinder – a critical distinction if you’re rekeying later.
- 8200 Series: Mortise deadbolt, often paired with Sargent 8200 mortise locksets in older commercial buildings along Wilshire and in the Arts District. Requires precise door edge prep; the faceplate is 1-1/4″ by 8″.
We carry OEM Sargent hardware and factory-authorized equivalents. For most Los Angeles residential jobs, the OEM 7800 series gives you the exact spec match and finish consistency. On commercial 4870 and 8200 installs, we often recommend the Sargent factory cylinder with an aftermarket Grade 1 deadbolt body where the existing door prep allows – saves you 15 – 20% without touching the keying integrity. Dunmore Locksmith is an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with Sargent, but we’re factory-authorized to install and warranty their hardware.
Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Is Failing
- Key sticks or requires jiggling at the 10 or 2 o’clock position. This usually means the cylinder plug’s pin chambers are worn or the keyway has accumulated enough Los Angeles airborne grit to create drag. In beach-adjacent properties from Santa Monica to San Pedro, salt air accelerates this corrosion.
- Thumb turn rotates but the bolt doesn’t move, or moves partially. The tailpiece connecting the thumb turn to the bolt mechanism has likely sheared, cracked, or slipped its cam notch. On Sargent 7800 series, this is often the zinc alloy tailpiece fatiguing after 8 – 12 years.
- Bolt throws hard or grinds in the strike plate. Either the door has settled on its hinges (common in older Los Angeles framing with our clay soil expansion cycles) or the bolt face itself is deformed from repeated misalignment.
- Deadbolt works from inside but not with the key outside. The cylinder tailpiece is intact but the external cam is stripped or the cylinder retaining screw has backed out – a failure mode we see after amateur rekeying attempts.
- Visible gap between the deadbolt faceplate and door edge. The mounting screws have stripped their wood holes, or the door has swollen from seasonal humidity. This stresses the entire mechanism and leads to premature cam failure.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Sargent 7800 residential deadbolt (installed) | $280 – $380 |
| Sargent 4870 commercial deadbolt (installed) | $340 – $460 |
| Sargent 8200 mortise deadbolt with door prep | $420 – $520 |
| Rekey to match existing key (same visit) | $18 – $28 per cylinder |
| Strike plate relocation or reinforcement | $45 – $85 |
What drives the range: the hardware grade (residential vs. commercial), whether the door needs new bore holes or mortise chiseling, and if we’re matching an existing master key system. Every Sargent deadbolt we install is covered for 365 days – if the repair fails, we return at no charge. The full price goes in writing before anyone touches your door, and that written price is what appears on the invoice. No call-out surcharge gets added when we arrive.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify the model number yourself – check the latch faceplate edge or the cylinder housing for stamped digits. You can also confirm the backset by measuring from the door edge to the center of the existing bore hole. Standard is 2-3/8″; older Los Angeles homes sometimes have 2-3/4″.
Where DIY goes wrong: Sargent mortise and heavy-duty cylindrical deadbolts require precise door edge prep. A chisel cut too deep or a strike plate mortise misaligned by even 1/8″ puts lateral stress on the bolt mechanism and voids the smooth operation that makes a Sargent worth installing. The tailpiece on 4870 series deadbolts also sits under spring tension – if it slips during cylinder removal, small parts launch into the door cavity. We’ve fished plenty of those out of hollow metal frames in downtown Los Angeles buildings.
If you’re confident in your measurements and the door prep is already correct, a competent DIYer can swap a 7800 series. For anything mortise, anything requiring new bore holes, or any door that’s sticking or sagging, call us at (910) 714-4287. We’ll quote the full installed price on the phone, send you the technician’s name and photo before arrival, and handle the door prep so the mechanism lasts.
FAQs
In Los Angeles conditions – dry heat, occasional Santa Ana dust, and coastal salt air if you’re west of the 405 – a residential Sargent 7800 deadbolt usually gives 12 – 18 years of smooth operation before internal wear becomes noticeable. Commercial 4870 and 8200 series, with their heavier brass and steel internals, often run 20+ years in climate-controlled buildings but may need cylinder service at year 10. Call (910) 714-4287 and we’ll assess whether yours needs replacement or just rekeying and lubrication.
Sometimes. A sticky key or grinding thumb turn often responds to cylinder rebuilding, tailpiece replacement, or proper strike alignment – repairs that run $140 – $220 versus the full replacement cost. But if the bolt housing is cracked, the faceplate screw holes are stripped beyond repair, or the finish is degraded to bare metal (common on south-facing doors in Los Angeles after a decade of UV exposure), replacement is the durable fix. We always quote both options when both exist.
A straightforward Sargent 7800 swap on a properly prepped door takes 25 – 40 minutes. Mortise 8200 installations with full door edge prep run 60 – 90 minutes. We carry the hardware, so there’s no waiting on parts. Schedule by calling (910) 714-4287 – we’ll give you a two-hour arrival window.
Yes. We keep 7800 series in satin chrome, bright brass, and oil-rubbed bronze; 4870 series in satin chrome and satin stainless; and 8200 mortise bodies with multiple faceplate options. If your Los Angeles building requires a specific finish or restricted keyway we don’t have loaded, we’ll source it and return within 24 hours – no second trip charge. A locked door should only stop the wrong person.
