Medeco Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Medeco-compatible master key systems for most commercial series, with typical installed pricing in Los Angeles running $340 – $680 for a standard three-level hierarchy on a single cylinder. Most jobs are surveyed and completed within one business day once we confirm your existing keyway and pinning schedule. Owners usually discover a problem when a sub-master key suddenly opens doors it shouldn’t, or when the grand master stops turning smoothly in locks that worked fine last month – both point to worn sidebar fingers, damaged master wafers, or a cylinder that’s been re-pinned too many times without replacing the core components.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco master key systems center on the Biaxial, Original, and X4 product lines, with the newer Medeco 3 (M3) and Medeco XT electronic cylinders using different pinning architectures entirely. If your key has angled cuts on both sides of the blade, you’re likely in the Biaxial family – the most common master key platform we see in Los Angeles commercial buildings from the 1990s through the mid-2000s. The keyway stamping (usually on the bow or shoulder) reads “M3,” “Biaxial,” or “X4” and tells us which sidebar profile and master wafer kit to bring.

Here’s where owners get stuck: Biaxial and Original cylinders share the same outer dimensions but use different sidebar geometries. Drop an Original master wafer into a Biaxial chamber and the sidebar won’t lift evenly – you’ll get intermittent key failure that looks like wear but is actually parts mismatch. We carry OEM Medeco master wafer kits in .003-inch increments, plus qualified aftermarket equivalents from Lockcraft and ESP for older Original systems where factory parts have long lead times. For master key hierarchies above four levels, we strongly recommend OEM – the tolerance stack across multiple shear lines leaves no margin for variance.

To identify your cylinder without disassembly, check the face for a small stamped code (usually two letters and three numbers on Biaxial, one letter and four numbers on Original). We can cross-reference that over the phone.

Signs Your Medeco Master Key System Is Failing

  • Sub-master keys open doors outside their level. This means a master wafer has sheared or worn to the point where it’s creating a false shear line at the grand master depth. In Los Angeles, we see this most often in buildings near the coast where salt air accelerates brass wafer corrosion – the metal thins, the shear line drifts, and key control collapses.
  • The grand master key sticks or requires jiggling in certain locks but not others. Usually indicates uneven sidebar finger wear. Some chambers have been cycled thousands more times than others, typically the main entry door versus a rarely-used storage closet. The fix isn’t a new key – it’s replacing the sidebar assembly and re-balancing the pinning.
  • You’ve added a new lock to the system and now existing keys don’t work reliably. Medeco master keying requires precise bitting depth calculations; an incorrectly specified new cylinder can introduce ghost keys that operate locks they shouldn’t. We’ve traced this to three Los Angeles properties in the last eighteen months where a previous locksmith used standard depth software instead of Medeco’s proprietary progression.
  • Key extraction feels gritty, or you see brass-colored dust in the keyway. The master wafers are breaking down. This happens faster in dry inland Los Angeles climates where lack of lubrication lets metal-on-metal wear accelerate – we typically see this at 8 – 12 years in valley locations versus 15+ years near the basin where humidity stays higher.
  • A cylinder was re-pinned “to match” but now accepts both old and new keys. The previous technician failed to remove all old master wafers, creating an accidental cross-keying situation. This is a security failure, not a wear issue, and requires complete cylinder breakdown and repinning to a clean master key schedule.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Master key system work in Los Angeles breaks down into three tiers:

  • Single cylinder, master wafer replacement only: $340 – $420. Includes cylinder removal, complete disassembly, replacement of all master wafers and sidebar components, reassembly to your existing key schedule, and reinstallation.
  • Single cylinder, full core rebuild with new master key schedule: $480 – $580. Required when key control has been compromised or when adding/removing access levels. Includes new bottom pins, master wafers, top pins, springs, sidebar, and two new working keys per level.
  • System-wide audit and rekey (typical 8 – 15 cylinder commercial property): $1,800 – $3,200. We survey every cylinder, replace worn components, verify no cross-keying exists, and deliver a written bitting list and key control register.

What drives the range: cylinder count, whether we can work from an existing key schedule or must decode from scratch, and whether the building uses removable core (Rim/Mortise) or fixed cylinders that require door disassembly. Every price is written and confirmed before work begins – the figure on the phone is the figure on the invoice. Parts carry Medeco’s standard warranty; our labor is covered for 365 days – if the repair fails, we return at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely verify your cylinder series and keyway code without tools – it’s stamped on the key bow or cylinder face. What you cannot safely do is disassemble a Medeco cylinder without a follower, a pinning tray, and the specific sidebar depressor tool that prevents the sidebar springs from launching across the room. We’ve found those springs in carpet, behind baseboards, and once in a technician’s coffee. More seriously, improper reassembly creates security gaps you won’t detect until someone opens a door they shouldn’t.

If your building has a valid master key schedule on file and you’re simply swapping a single failed cylinder, a qualified maintenance person with Medeco-specific training can handle it. For anything involving hierarchy changes, cross-keying verification, or key control recovery, call us. We’ll quote the scope by phone, schedule a survey if needed, and send a background-checked, photo-badged technician – by name and photo before arrival, per The Threshold Standard. If anyone shows up you weren’t told to expect, that visit is covered at no charge.

A locked door should only stop the wrong person. When your master key system stops doing that reliably, the fix is technical and the stakes are real.
