Medeco Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Medeco deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically runs $280 – $520 for a complete single-cylinder replacement, including the cylinder, strike plate alignment, and keyway lubrication. We stock Medeco Maxum 11*503 and Medeco 54*S series hardware on our trucks, and most residential installs are completed same-day. Most Los Angeles homeowners realize their Medeco deadbolt is failing when the key starts catching at 10 or 2 o’clock, or when the thumb turn grows stiff enough that a child or older family member can’t operate it from inside.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco has manufactured deadbolts under several series names over the decades, and the mounting specs aren’t interchangeable. The Maxum 11*503 remains the most common residential grade we encounter in Los Angeles homes, particularly in the post-1990 construction stock of Studio City, Sherman Oaks, and the western San Fernando Valley. Older installs may use the 54*S series, which shares the same 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ backset but uses a slightly smaller faceplate that can leave visible scarring if swapped without proper escutcheon matching.
To identify your model, remove the interior thumb turn and look for a stamped code on the cam housing. The first two digits indicate the series; the asterisk denotes the keyway generation. Medeco’s Biaxial and original pin-tumbler cylinders are not cross-compatible with current M3 keyways without full cylinder replacement.
We carry OEM Medeco cylinders and hardware. Aftermarket cylinders exist, but we’ve found the tolerances on third-party Medeco-compatible cams vary enough that rekeying becomes unreliable. For a lock you’re trusting with your family’s safety, we don’t recommend gambling on a $40 savings. Dunmore Locksmith is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Medeco.
Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Is Failing
- Key sticks or requires jiggling at specific angles. This usually indicates sidebar pin wear or accumulated grit from Los Angeles’ dry, dusty air working into the keyway. The Medeco sidebar system depends on precise lift-and-rotate timing; once pins develop flat spots, the geometric coding loses accuracy.
- Thumb turn becomes stiff or requires two hands. The internal cam linkage is binding, often from corrosion where the bolt meets the strike plate. In coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Venice or San Pedro, salt air accelerates this corrosion inside the bolt chamber even when the exterior looks clean.
- Deadbolt doesn’t fully extend or retract. The bolt tailpiece may be cracked, or the mounting screws have loosened enough that the entire assembly torques during operation. We’ve seen this repeatedly in older Los Angeles homes with settling door frames, particularly in the hills around Echo Park and Los Feliz.
- Key turns but bolt doesn’t move. The cam has sheared or the tailpiece has separated from the bolt carrier. On Medeco deadbolts, this typically means the entire cylinder must be replaced; the cam is not a separately serviceable component in residential models.
- Visible play or wobble in the exterior cylinder. The mounting bracket screws have backed out, or the door face has compressed around the cylinder housing. Left unaddressed, this stresses the keyway and accelerates pin wear.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Medeco deadbolt installation costs in the Los Angeles market:
- Single-cylinder Maxum replacement (standard door prep): $280 – $380
- Double-cylinder or high-security configuration: $380 – $520
- Non-standard door prep or mortise adaptation: add $80 – $150
- Rekeying additional locks to match new keyway: $25 – $45 per cylinder
The range reflects door condition more than hardware cost. A properly prepped door in a newer Los Angeles condo takes 35 minutes. A 1950s solid-core door with paint buildup, stripped screw holes, and a misaligned strike plate can take two hours and require jamb reinforcement.
Every quote goes in writing before we start. The price on the phone is the price on the invoice. No dispatch fee, no “trip charge” added at the door. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation: if the bolt binds, the key sticks, or any component fails within a year, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things yourself. First, spray a dry Teflon or graphite lubricant into the keyway and work the key several times. Second, tighten the two mounting screws on the interior thumb turn plate; if they’ve loosened, the cylinder torques during operation and mimics internal failure.
Don’t attempt cylinder removal or rekeying. Medeco’s sidebar mechanism contains springs under tension that can launch pins across the room, and the angled cuts on Medeco keys require specialized pinning kit gauges that aren’t sold at hardware stores. More critically, a misinstalled cylinder leaves your door unlockable or, worse, unlockable by any key that happens to turn far enough.

FAQs
In Los Angeles’ dry climate, a properly maintained Medeco deadbolt typically lasts 15 – 20 years for residential use. Coastal exposure or lack of lubrication can cut that to 8 – 12 years. Call (910) 714-4287 for a free inspection if you’re unsure of your lock’s condition.
Sometimes. A sticky keyway or loose mounting can be corrected without full replacement. But cam damage, cracked tailpieces, or worn sidebar pins require cylinder replacement; Medeco does not sell these as individual repair parts to independent technicians. We’ll tell you honestly which category you’re in before any work starts.
Most residential Medeco deadbolt installations take 45 – 90 minutes, depending on door condition and whether the strike plate needs adjustment. We arrive with the hardware, so there’s no return trip. Call (910) 714-4287 to book a window that works for your schedule.
We stock Medeco Maxum and 54*S series deadbolts on every service vehicle, along with Schlage and Kwikset hardware for mixed installations. You don’t need to purchase anything in advance. The model and finish are confirmed on-site before installation begins.
