Kwikset Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Kwikset lock rekeying in Los Angeles typically costs $19 – $35 per cylinder for standard residential pin-tumbler sets, with most jobs completed same-day. We stock Kwikset SmartKey and traditional pin kits on every truck, so a single call handles everything from a lost-key situation to a full property turnover. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover they need rekeying after moving into a new place in neighborhoods like Echo Park or West Adams, after a roommate or tenant leaves, or when a key starts sticking halfway through the turn.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Kwikset’s product lines break into two families, and knowing which you own changes everything about the rekeying approach.
Traditional pin-tumbler cylinders – found on Kwikset Signature Series deadbolts (980, 985), entry knob sets (400T, 730T), and lever handles (740, 788) – use standard bottom pins, top pins, and springs that we repin with a lab kit in about 15 minutes. These have a small keyway stamped “KW1” or “KW10” and a smooth face with no slot near the keyhole.
SmartKey cylinders – recognizable by the small rectangular slot next to the keyway and the “SmartKey” branding – use a sidebar and wafer system that rekeys with a working key plus the reset tool, no disassembly required. But here’s the compatibility gotcha: SmartKey Gen 1 (2008 – 2012) and Gen 2/3 (2013 – present) use different reset cradle geometries. We carry both cradle types, because forcing a Gen 3 tool into a Gen 1 cylinder cracks the sidebar housing, a $45 – $65 replacement.
Aftermarket pinning kits for traditional Kwikset cylinders work fine if they’re .003-inch tolerance or better; we use LAB and HPC kits that meet that spec. For SmartKey, we use factory reset tools and replacement sidebar assemblies – the aftermarket clones we’ve tested in Los Angeles humidity fail at roughly double the rate.
Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece has slipped or the cam has rounded off inside the cylinder. On Kwikset deadbolts, this often traces to a tailpiece set screw that backed out – common after repeated forceful turning in older Los Angeles homes where door frames have settled.
- Key sticks or requires jiggling at certain angles. Worn pins, debris, or a bent key. In coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Venice or San Pedro, salt air corrosion accelerates pin wear; we see this at 6 – 8 years instead of the inland 12 – 15 year lifespan.
- Key works on one side of the door but not the other. The cylinder tailpiece is misaligned with the latch or bolt mechanism. Double-cylinder deadbolts are especially sensitive to this after rekeying if the tailpiece phase isn’t reset correctly.
- SmartKey cylinder won’t accept the reset tool. Internal sidebar wafers have jammed, usually from a previous DIY attempt with the wrong tool or a key inserted halfway during reset. This locks the cylinder in its current keying; recovery requires disassembly or replacement.
- Key shears off or the cylinder spins freely. The cylinder retaining clip has broken or the plug retainer has failed. On Kwikset knobs and levers, this often means the entire chassis needs replacement, not just rekeying.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Price Range | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pin-tumbler rekey (1 cylinder) | $19 – $35 | Disassembly, repin to new key, 2 new keys, reassembly, function test |
| SmartKey reset (working key available) | $15 – $25 | Factory tool reset, 2 new keys, function verification |
| SmartKey recovery (jammed/no working key) | $45 – $65 | Cylinder removal, sidebar replacement or full cylinder swap, new keys |
| Full lock replacement (if cylinder damaged) | $85 – $140 | New Kwikset hardware, installation, rekey to match property, 2 keys |
| Property-wide rekey (3+ cylinders keyed alike) | $45 – $95 total | All cylinders matched to single key, master keying available |
What drives the range: cylinder type (traditional vs. SmartKey), accessibility (deadbolt vs. knob vs. lever), and whether we need to extract a broken key or recover a jammed SmartKey first. Every price is written and confirmed before we start – the number on the phone is the number on the invoice. No call-out surcharge, no after-hours fee for standard bookings. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if the rekey fails or a key stops working, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s what you can safely check yourself. Verify you’re using the correct key (sounds obvious, but mix-ups between old and new keys cause half the “failures” we see). Spray a dry graphite lubricant into the keyway if sticking is minor – never WD-40, which gums up in Los Angeles dust.
Where DIY goes wrong: SmartKey reset requires the working key, the correct generation tool, and a specific sequence. Insert the key halfway, turn at the wrong angle, or use a Gen 3 tool on a Gen 1 cylinder, and you’ll jam the sidebar wafers. Recovery then needs cylinder removal, which on Kwikset deadbolts means dealing with the mounting screws hidden behind the interior thumbturn – a simple task with the right offset screwdriver, a stripped-head nightmare without it. For traditional pin-tumbler cylinders, repinning demands a plug follower, pinning tweezers, and a depth key set; the springs are under light tension and easy to launch across the room, but the real risk is reassembling with a pin in the wrong chamber, which leaves you with a lock that works until it doesn’t.
We carry full pinning kits, all SmartKey generations, and replacement cylinders on every truck. Call (910) 714-4287 and we’ll give you the exact price before we head out.
FAQs
A standard pin-tumbler rekey takes 10 – 15 minutes per cylinder once we’re at the door. SmartKey reset is faster, about 5 minutes if the cylinder is functional. Jammed SmartKey recovery or cylinder replacement runs 30 – 45 minutes. We schedule a 1-hour arrival window and most Los Angeles appointments are same-day or next-day.
Rekeying and repair solve different problems. Rekeying changes which key operates the lock; it doesn’t fix mechanical wear. If your cylinder turns loosely, the bolt drags, or the latch sticks, those need repair or replacement. We’ll tell you straight which you need when we see it – no charge for the assessment.
A properly done rekey lasts the life of the lock itself, typically 15 – 20 years for traditional cylinders in Los Angeles’s inland valleys, 8 – 12 years within five miles of the coast where salt air accelerates corrosion. SmartKey cylinders have more moving parts; we’ve seen them run 10 – 14 years with normal residential use. The rekey doesn’t wear out – the lock does.
Yes. Every Dunmore Locksmith truck carries LAB pinning kits for traditional Kwikset cylinders, factory SmartKey reset tools for Gen 1 through Gen 3, replacement sidebar assemblies, and full replacement cylinders in satin nickel and polished brass finishes. We’re independent of Kwikset – not a factory dealer – but we stock what fails because we’ve seen it fail across Los Angeles for seventeen years.
A locked door should only stop the wrong person. If your Kwikset isn’t doing its job, or you’re not sure who still has a key, call (910) 714-4287. We’ll give you the full price before we dispatch, send you the technician’s name and photo, and stand behind the work for 365 days.
