Medeco Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Medeco lock rekeying in Los Angeles typically costs $85 – $165 per cylinder when done on-site, and we carry the full pin kit for Medeco’s 6-pin Biaxial and original M3 lines on every service truck. Most residential rekeys in neighborhoods like Palms, Silver Lake, and the Valley are completed in 20 – 40 minutes. Same-day appointments are available, and we’ll confirm your exact price before dispatching a technician.
Most Los Angeles homeowners discover they need a Medeco rekey after a move, a lost key, or a change in household staff. Sometimes it’s subtler: a key that used to turn smoothly now catches, or one of several Medeco keys no longer retracts the deadbolt fully. These are signs the pin chamber needs attention, not just lubrication.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco has produced three distinct cylinder architectures since the 1970s, and each requires a different pinning kit. The original Medeco Biaxial, still common in 1990s Los Angeles apartment buildings from Koreatown to Westwood, uses offset pins with chisel points at two angles. The M3 series, introduced in the early 2000s, adds a sidebar element and a third pin angle. The newer X4, found in some commercial installations downtown, uses a standard .115″ diameter pin but retains Medeco’s angled-cut key system.
You can identify your series by the keyway stamp on the cylinder face or the key head logo. Biaxial keys show a “B” prefix; M3 keys carry the M3 triangle; X4 keys are stamped X4. The cylinder housing diameter also differs: Biaxial rim cylinders measure 1.125″, while M3 deadbolt cylinders run 1.250″. We stock pinning kits for all three, plus the specialized sidebar springs that M3 cylinders require. Dunmore Locksmith is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Medeco, though our technicians are factory-authorized to service their hardware.
For Los Angeles customers, we generally recommend OEM Medeco pins for Biaxial and M3 cylinders. The metallurgy matters: aftermarket pins we’ve tested from three common suppliers showed faster wear in coastal humidity, particularly in beach-adjacent neighborhoods like Venice and Santa Monica where salt air accelerates oxidation. X4 cylinders are more forgiving and accept quality aftermarket pinning if budget is tight.
Signs Your Medeco Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key requires jiggling to turn. The angled Medeco pins are no longer aligning cleanly with the sidebar or shear line. In Los Angeles, this often follows key duplication at a hardware store that lacks Medeco’s proprietary key machine, producing a slightly off-angle cut that gradually wears the pin faces.
- Key turns but bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam has slipped alignment with the cylinder plug. This is mechanical, not pinning-related, but rekeying is the right moment to inspect and correct it since the cylinder must come apart anyway.
- One key works, a duplicate doesn’t. Medeco’s angle cuts are unforgiving. A marginally cut duplicate will engage some pins and not others. We see this frequently after tenants in Los Angeles rental units use cheap key-copy kiosks.
- Sticky operation that lubrication doesn’t fix. Graphite or Teflon spray helps for a week, then the problem returns. The pin chambers have developed burrs or the pins themselves have flattened at the contact angles, changing their lift geometry.
- Key extraction requires force. The plug has developed end-play from worn bearings, or a bottom pin has chipped and is catching the key blade on withdrawal. This will worsen until the key breaks off or the cylinder seizes entirely.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Medeco rekeying in Los Angeles breaks down as follows:
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Single Medeco deadbolt rekey (Biaxial/M3) | $85 – $125 |
| Medeco knob/lever cylinder rekey | $75 – $110 |
| Medeco rim cylinder (mailbox/gate) | $65 – $95 |
| Additional cylinders same visit (each) | $45 – $75 |
| Lost key / lockout + rekey (after-hours) | $145 – $195 |
What drives the range: cylinder accessibility (a deadbolt on a solid-core door takes longer than a rim cylinder on a gate), whether the current key is available (lost-key situations require picking or drilling first), and series complexity (M3 sidebar work adds steps). Every price is written and confirmed before we dispatch. That written price is the price on the invoice. No call-out surcharge, no after-the-fact totals.
All rekeying work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cylinder malfunctions due to our pinning or installation, we return at no charge. We also cut two new keys on-site with Medeco-compatible blanks; additional keys are $8 – $12 each depending on series.
DIY or Call Us?
Medeco cylinders are not beginner-friendly. The angled pins must be loaded in correct orientation, chamber by chamber, with a follower tool that protects the sidebar springs. M3 cylinders add a sidebar with up to five finger pins that drop into angled slots. Misalign one spring during reassembly and the cylinder will either not key at all or will key to any key that fits the keyway.
What you can safely check: confirm the keyway stamp, count how many keys you have, and test every key in every lock position. What you should not attempt: disassembling the cylinder, removing the cam or tailpiece, or using a generic pinning kit. The specialized tools cost more than our service call, and a mistake means replacing the entire cylinder at $200 – $400.
We’re not going to tell you this is dangerous like a garage door spring. It isn’t. But it is precise, and Medeco’s security depends on that precision. A locked door should only stop the wrong person. If your pinning is sloppy, it might stop everyone including you.

FAQs
In Los Angeles conditions, a properly pinned Medeco cylinder lasts 10 – 15 years of normal residential use. Coastal properties from Marina del Rey to Malibu may see slightly faster pin wear due to salt air; interior Valley locations often exceed the upper end of that range. Call (910) 714-4287 if you’re unsure whether wear or pinning is your issue – estimates are free.
Sometimes. If a single pin is chipped or a spring is fatigued, we can replace that component. But if the plug or bible shows scoring, or if multiple pins have flattened contact angles, full rekeying with fresh pins is more reliable and often comparably priced. We assess this on-site and tell you honestly which path makes sense.
Most single-cylinder Medeco rekeys take 20 – 40 minutes on-site. A full home with four cylinders typically runs 60 – 90 minutes. We stock Medeco pinning kits, blanks, and replacement springs on every truck, so there’s no delay for parts.
We stock Biaxial, M3, and X4 pinning kits, sidebar springs, cams, and tailpieces on every service vehicle. For obsolete Medeco cylinders or specialized commercial formats, we can source overnight from our distributor. In 18 years of Los Angeles service, we’ve yet to encounter a Medeco cylinder we couldn’t handle.
