Kwikset Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Kwikset master key system installation in Los Angeles typically runs $340 – $780 for a standard three-level commercial or residential setup, and we can usually survey and schedule within 24 hours. Most owners discover their system is failing when the master key suddenly opens some doors but not others, or when a change key starts working in locks it shouldn’t – both signs the pin-stack hierarchy inside the cylinder has drifted out of spec. In Los Angeles, where Kwikset SmartKey and traditional pin-tumbler hardware sits on thousands of apartment doors, small offices, and homeowner association entries, that drift usually starts with one cylinder and spreads.
We’re Dunmore Locksmith – independent of Kwikset, but factory-authorized to install, rekey, and repair their full hardware line. Our trucks stock Kwikset master key cylinders, pinning kits, and key blanks for same-day replacement across Los Angeles, from Venice to Echo Park.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Kwikset master key systems break down into two hardware families, and knowing which you have saves a trip.
Traditional pin-tumbler cylinders: These are the Kwikset 660 deadbolts, 200S entry knobs, and the commercial-grade 780/980 series. Look for “KW1” stamped on the key bow, or a small “Kwikset” oval on the cylinder face. Master keying here requires factory-original bottom pins, master pins, and top pins in specific increments – 0.015″ per step – and the math has to balance across every cylinder in the system. We stock OEM Kwikset pinning kits because aftermarket pin kits often run 0.003″ – 0.005″ off-spec, which doesn’t sound like much until your master key starts hanging up in July humidity.
SmartKey cylinders (introduced 2008, generations 1 – 3): These can be master-keyed, but only with the SmartKey Learn Tool and specific master key blanks – not the same hardware as traditional Kwikset. The Gen 3 cylinders, identifiable by the small “SMT” marking near the keyway, have tighter tolerances that earlier aftermarket tools can’t reliably set. We’ve replaced dozens of Los Angeles SmartKey master systems where a handyman used the wrong generation tool and sheared the sidebar.
For either type, we match the keyway profile exactly – KW1, KW10, or the less common SC1/KW hybrid – and we check door prep measurements (2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ backset, 1-3/8″ or 1-3/4″ door thickness) before dispatching. The wrong combination means the cylinder fits but the latch doesn’t throw fully.
Signs Your Kwikset Master Key Systems Is Failing
- The master key works in some locks but not others. This usually means one cylinder’s pin stack has shifted – often from repeated rekeying, worn springs, or using a duplicated key that’s slightly off-angle. In Los Angeles, the dry season followed by winter moisture expansion can accelerate spring fatigue in exterior locks.
- A change key (tenant key, employee key) suddenly opens multiple units. This is the most serious symptom: a master pin has worn down or fallen out, collapsing the hierarchy. We see this in older Los Angeles fourplexes where Kwikset cylinders haven’t been serviced in 8 – 12 years.
- Keys require jiggling or specific angles to turn. The pin chambers may be worn oval instead of round, or debris has packed behind the bottom pins. Kwikset brass cylinders are softer than commercial-grade steel-lined equivalents, so this wear shows faster in high-traffic doors.
- The key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam has cracked, or the cylinder housing has shifted in the door. On Kwikset 660 deadbolts, the zinc alloy tailpiece is a known weak point under torque – we replace it with a hardened steel equivalent when we rebuild the cylinder.
- New keys cut to code won’t insert fully. The keyway has been damaged by a foreign object, or the warding (the internal grooves that guide the key) has burrs from a prior extraction attempt. We’ve pulled broken keys, paperclips, and once a small screwdriver from Kwikset keyways in Los Angeles service calls.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range in Los Angeles |
|---|---|
| Single cylinder rebuild (traditional pin-tumbler) | $180 – $260 |
| Full system rekey with new master hierarchy | $340 – $520 |
| SmartKey master system setup (Gen 2 or 3) | $420 – $680 |
| Commercial-grade cylinder replacement (780/980 series) | $280 – $380 per door |
| Additional change keys cut | $8 – $14 each |
What drives the range: number of cylinders in the hierarchy, whether we can repin existing hardware or need new cylinders, and whether the door prep needs adjustment. A three-level master system (master, sub-master, change) for a 12-unit Los Angeles apartment building takes longer to pin and test than a simple master/change two-level setup.
Every price goes in writing before work starts – no after-the-fact totals. Parts and labor are itemized, and the work is covered for 365 days under our Done Right Promise: if the repair fails, we return at no charge. We don’t add a call-out surcharge on arrival; the written price is the invoice price.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s where the line sits for Kwikset master key systems.
What you can safely check: Confirm the keyway isn’t obstructed with a flashlight. Test whether the problem is the key (try a different copy) or the cylinder. Note which doors fail and which don’t – that pattern tells us whether it’s one cylinder or the whole hierarchy.
Where DIY goes wrong: Master keying requires a pinning kit with exact increments, a key gauge, and the math to build a hierarchy where no key combination overlaps illegally. One wrong master pin depth and two change keys suddenly open each other’s doors – a security failure you might not discover until a tenant calls. Kwikset SmartKey systems are even less forgiving; the sidebar and wafer stack require factory tools to set without damage.
We’re not going to tell you this is rocket science. But we’ve rebuilt enough Los Angeles systems where the owner’s first rekey created a master key that worked on every door in the building, including ones it shouldn’t. A locked door should only stop the wrong person – and that includes making sure the right keys stop at the right doors.

FAQs
In Los Angeles conditions, a properly maintained Kwikset pin-tumbler master system lasts 10 – 15 years; SmartKey cylinders often need attention at 7 – 10 years due to the more complex sidebar mechanism. Coastal salt air in Venice or Marina del Rey can shorten that by 20 – 30% if exterior locks aren’t lubricated annually. Call (910) 714-4287 and we’ll assess whether yours needs full replacement or just repinning – estimates are free.
Most traditional Kwikset cylinders can be repinned and re-sprung without replacing the housing, which costs roughly half of full cylinder replacement. SmartKey cylinders are less repairable – if the sidebar or wafer stack is damaged, replacement is usually the only reliable fix. We’ll tell you honestly which path makes sense after seeing the lock. Call (910) 714-4287 for an exact quote.
A single cylinder rebuild takes 30 – 45 minutes on-site; a full building survey and rekey for 8 – 12 doors typically runs 3 – 4 hours. We schedule these during business hours so Perry Osgood or one of our technicians can test every key combination before leaving – there’s no “we’ll come back if it doesn’t work.” Call (910) 714-4287 to schedule.
Yes – we carry Kwikset pinning kits, replacement cylinders, SmartKey Learn Tools, and key blanks for KW1 and KW10 keyways on every Los Angeles service vehicle. For commercial 780/980 series or large master hierarchies, we may need to pull additional stock from our warehouse, but same-day completion is standard. Call (910) 714-4287 to confirm availability for your specific setup.
